Use copper cloths for cleaning: What you need to know

by Johannes

Copper cloths help you clean your oven, burnt pot or grate easily and without chemicals. They are the insider tip par excellence when you want to get rid of stubborn dirt.

Copper cloth for cleaning: How to use copper cloths in the household

Copper cleaning cloths have actually been used for many years, even though they are less well known than dishwashing sponges, for example. They have an antibacterial effect and are kind to the environment.

  • Copper cloths are an environmentally friendly alternative to sponges and cleaning cloths made of synthetic material. They are used without chemical cleaners and are washable, so they can be used for longer. Last but not least, they can be disposed of and recycled as scrap metal.
  • In the kitchen, copper cloths are particularly helpful against stubborn dirt. Burnt pots, pans, baking trays and your oven can be cleaned without much scrubbing.
    • Moist copper cloths are soft and won’t scratch, so you can also use them on ceramic hobs, grills or for stainless steel kitchen sinks and cutlery.
    • In the household, copper cloths also help you to remove rust and limescale stains. You can also use them to clean objects made of glass or chrome.

What to look out for when using copper cloths

Copper cloths are quite straightforward to use – but you should still be aware of a few things when cleaning:

      • Always use copper cloths with water. They become softer when they are wet – and only then can you be as good as sure that they won’t leave any scratches.
      • Do not use scouring cream or other chemical cleaners, as there may be surprising chemical reactions. If a cleaner contains acetic acid, for example, the copper cloth will turn green. Normal washing-up liquid, on the other hand, should not usually be a problem.
      • Copper cloths are not suitable for coated or painted objects. You should therefore not use them to clean Teflon pans. It is also better to use other products for wood and plastic.
        • Copper cloths can be washed in hot water. If you use the dishwasher for this, put the cloths in the cutlery drawer. You can also wash the cloths in the washing machine – but then in a laundry net.
        • General: Especially if you use copper cloths, follow the instructions for use. It would be helpful to also read the instructions for the dirty object (if you still have them). You should also test on a small, less visible surface before using for the first time to see if the copper cloths damage it.
