LAN and Ethernet cables – what’s the difference

by Pramith

If you are looking for a network cable, the terms LAN and Ethernet will come up. In this practical tip we will tell you exactly what the difference is between the two technologies.

Difference between LAN and Ethernet

LAN is a local area network. This local area network connects various devices such as routers, PCs and printers with each other within your own four walls.

  • To set up a local area network (LAN), you need special cables. These are LAN cables. To be more precise, however, they are Ethernet cables.
  • The LAN cable is merely a generic term. It includes all cables that are suitable for setting up a LAN. In addition to the Ethernet standard, there are also the Arcnet and Token Ring standards.
    • The Ethernet has prevailed and is now the common standard. It is a copper cable twisted in itself.
    • If you are looking for a new network cable, you do not have to consider the difference between LAN and Ethernet. You always get the same product.
