How often to go to the solarium? - It can become harmful so quickly - Practical Tips

How often to go to the solarium? – It can become harmful so quickly

by Pramith

If you want to look like you’re fresh from a holiday in winter, you can go to the solarium. But you should also know how often this is healthy. Because the same applies to artificial tanning as to sunbathing: if you overdo it, you damage your health.

How often should I go to the solarium? Sun tanning yes – but in moderation

How often to go to the solarium – this is a question many people ask themselves. Whether it’s pre-tanning for the summer or post-tanning in the winter – there are plenty of opportunities. But you shouldn’t overdo it…

  • If you got a really nice tan on your summer holiday, it is more advisable to book fewer solarium visits. Your skin needs a holiday from UV radiation. Otherwise, the risk of getting skin cancer grows very high.
  • A solarium does not stress the skin any less than the sun. After all, both promote pigment formation. If exposed to the sun for too long, skin cells are destroyed and this can then lead to skin cancer
  • So, depending on your skin type, more than 20 to 40 sunbaths per year are not advisable. If your skin type is more southern, 40 sunbaths should not be a problem.
  • The requirement applies to sunbathing in general, not just to the tanning bed. A two-week summer holiday at the beach is actually enough to meet the annual allowance. Then you should also do without a tanning bed altogether.
  • If you get your tan in a solarium, you should not do this more than three times a month. You should also not lie under the tubes for too long: 10 to 15 minutes per session is enough, it should not be longer.

In these cases, the sunbed should be used with caution

  • If you have ever had skin cancer or one of its precursors, the sunbed is taboo for you
  • Some medicines increase your sensitivity to UV light. If you have to take certain medicines, avoid going to the sunbed or ask your doctor first.
    • Children and adolescents have no business in a solarium. Young skin cannot yet build up sufficient protection against radiation.
      • If you have a lot of pigment spots or freckles, the solarium is also not good for your skin. You can get skin cancer much faster.
