Screen sharing via FaceTime – here’s how

by Flo

You can share your screen via FaceTime. This is handy for sharing content with your loved ones in the easiest way. You can also watch films and view photos together. Read here how this works and also what alternatives there are to this.

Share FaceTime screen with SharePlay

With iOS 15.1 you can now also share the screen of your iPhone or iPad via Facetime. You can do this via the Shareplay function.

  • Just start a FaceTime call.
  • Then click on the “Share content” button. The associated icon shows a person in front of a screen. Then confirm by clicking on “Share my screen. “
  • If you now share the screen, your callers will be able to see what is on your screen until you change this by clicking on “Stop sharing”.
  • However, the control is only yours. If you receive messages during screen sharing, only you can see them. You also cannot share content through your screen that requires a subscription, purchase or line.
  • But with iOS 15.1 and the SharePlay feature, you can watch videos and listen to music together. However, this does not work across national borders.
  • Through supported apps such as AppleTV, individual call participants can now control the shared content as SharePlay syncs the apps.

ShareFaceTime Screen: Alternatives to SharePlay

If you don’t have iOS 15.1 yet, you have the option to share your screen with your friends via iMessage. Since you can also facetiming while using it, this is a kind of screen sharing via FaceTime with a diversion via iMessage.

  • To share your screen via iMessage, go to the chat of the contact on your Mac with whom you want to share your screen.
  • Click on “Details” here and select the character with the two blue rectangles (see second picture).
  • Now select whether you want to “ask for screen sharing” or issue an “invitation to access my screen” yourself; the screen sharing is ready.
  • Another option for screen sharing is Skype. However, for this way you have to give up FaceTime and use Skype instead.
