Using Google Drive offline – this is how it works

Google Drive can also be used offline, which can be helpful when travelling, for example. However, you must first activate offline access. You can read how to do this here.

Google Drive: Enable offline access

Google Drive can only be used offline in conjunction with Google Chrome. You can download the browser here. If you have Google Chrome installed, you can activate offline access as follows:

  • Open the page https://drive.google.com in Google Chrome. If necessary, log in with your Google user name and password.
  • In the upper right corner you will find the cogwheel symbol. Click on it and select “Settings” from the drop-down menu that appears.
  • Click on it and select “Settings” from the drop-down menu that appears.
  • Under “General” you will find the sub-item “Offline”. Activate the offline mode by placing a tick here.
  • The extension “Google Docs Offline” is then automatically added to Chrome.
  • Now you can also work offline with Google Drive.
  • Note: Google Drive stores a maximum of 4000 documents or 5 GB in offline mode.
