Many users wonder whether their router tracks their internet search history. The router ensures that the PC is connected to the internet. This means that it could also store data
Does the router store your history? What you need to know
Home routers create usage logs by default. However, the information stored is very limited and only records basic events such as connection establishment/termination, session times, errors, and system events. The router does not store which websites have been visited by default.
- However, modern routers sometimes offer much more than just forwarding data packets: they have extensive logging and monitoring functions, which vary depending on the manufacturer and model. Some modern routers offer detailed logging functions, including recording assigned internal and external IP addresses, session times for individual devices, analysis of data traffic by device and application, or, in selected models (e.g., ASUS RT-AX92U), logging of visited websites (web history).
- Even if you have activated the parental controls on your router, at least an attempt to access a blocked website will be logged. You can view this information in the router settings.
- With the appropriate technical knowledge and additional settings, it is possible to record Internet traffic more comprehensively (e.g., through packet capture). However, special programs and knowledge are required for evaluation. If you have not made any such settings, your router does not monitor your surfing behavior.
- Regardless of this, no complete browsing histories are stored by Internet service providers in Germany. Data retention is currently suspended. Only connection data may be stored and evaluated under certain circumstances and only by court order. This data is relevant for investigative authorities but cannot be viewed by private users.
Step-by-step instructions: Delete router history or disable logging
Follow these steps to delete your router’s history:
- Find your router’s IP address. This can usually be found on the back or bottom of the device. Common default addresses are 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
- Open a web browser and enter the IP address in the address bar.
- Log in with your access data. The default username and password are often found on the router or in the manual. If you have changed the data, use the new ones.
- Look for the “Logs,” “System Log,” “Session Logs,” or similar section in the menu. The exact name may vary depending on the manufacturer.
- Click on “Delete logs,” “Delete log,” or a similar option. Confirm the deletion if necessary.
- Save the changes and close the administration interface if necessary.
