Do you need to change the Wi-Fi settings on your HP printer? This quick tutorial will show you how in just three minutes, after which you can print as usual via your network.
HP printers: How to change the Wi-Fi configuration on the printer display
Out of sight, out of mind: Printing with HP devices via Wi-Fi is convenient and easy. You only realize that there is no cable connected to the printer when network access data changes and print jobs fail.
- To change the configuration for an existing network on your HP printer, proceed as if you were setting up a new network: These instructions are based on an HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, but should work similarly on most devices.
- Open the status menu by swiping down from the top of the printer’s home screen.
- Now tap the network menu icon. It shows an antenna that emits beams.
- Here you can see whether your printer is currently connected to a network. If it is not, tap the cogwheel in the bottom left corner to access the settings.
- Select “Wireless Settings” from the menu and then open the “Wireless Setup Wizard”.
- After a short time, your HP printer will list all available networks. Tap your network and enter the new password. Then select “Connect”.
- In a few seconds, your printer should confirm the successful connection and be accessible again via the network.

Set up a network connection via the “HP Smart” app
You can also customize your printer’s network settings via the “HP Smart” app. This saves you the hassle of entering the Wi-Fi password on the small printer screen.
- If you haven’t added your printer to the app yet, do that first.
- If your printer is no longer accessible over the network, reset the network settings. You can access the “Restore network settings” menu via the “Wireless” or “Setup” menu on the “Network setup” or “Settings” page.
- Once you have activated this option, you can search for your printer via the app and set it up again.
Printing with an HP printer over the network
You can access a network printer with any common operating system.
- In Windows 10, open the settings by pressing the [Win] + [I] key combination and navigate to “Devices” ☻ “Printers and Scanners”. Then click on “Add printer or scanner”. Windows lists all available devices. Select your printer and click “Add”. Now you can access your printer via the print dialog, for example from the Office apps. To scan, you need to install the HP Smart app from the Windows Store.
- AirPrint-capable HP printers are recognized on Apple devices without any action on your part. Make sure that your smartphone and printer are logged into the same Wi-Fi network. Open an image or document. Then tap the share icon and select your device under “Print”.
- On Android, you usually don’t need to add Wi-Fi-enabled printers at all; they are easily recognized using the standard print driver. Open a photo or document you want to print. Tap the three dots and then select “Print” or first select “Share” and then “Print”. Your printer will most likely appear in the list. If not, install the HP Smart app from the Google Play Store.
