If you often create Word documents in different languages, a spellcheck that covers several languages at once is very convenient. This function is easy to activate.
Setting multiple languages in the Word spellcheck
The spellchecker in Word is a useful tool for eliminating small errors in your text. However, as soon as two or more languages are involved, almost every word is underlined in red. To avoid this, set multiple languages for the spellchecker.
- First, select the “Check” tab.
- In the Quick Access Toolbar, go to the “Language” dialog box and then select “Language Settings”.
- In the “Set Office Language Preferences” menu, go to “Select Editing Languages” and in the “Add More Editing Languages” pull-down menu, select the languages that are relevant to you.
- The selection is very extensive and ranges from Afrikaans to Zulu to Tatar. However, there is a catch: Even if the languages are offered, you probably don’t have the language pack on your computer. By default, the German Word includes the spell check for German, English and French, with German and English usually already activated. You have to purchase additional language packs.
- Select the desired language, confirm by clicking “Add” and activate the keyboard layout with a final mouse click.
Buy language packs for Word from Microsoft
If you want to install additional languages in Word, you need the language pack for Microsoft Office.
- For Office 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365, you can download language packs directly from the Microsoft support page.
- Select the desired language from the drop-down menu and click “Download”.
- Save the file to your computer, install it by double-clicking, and then change your language in Office.
