Forgot your Google account password: Here’s what you can do

by Mike

If you’ve forgotten the password to your Google account, there’s no need to panic: you can always create a new one with just a little effort.

Forgot your Google account password: Here’s how to recover it

Depending on the data you previously stored in your user account, Google offers you various verification options. The quickest way to regain access to your account is with a linked email address. There are also alternatives, but in extreme cases you may need to be patient:

  • Open Google’s account recovery in your browser.

  • Enter the email address associated with your Google account. Alternatively, you can also enter your cell phone number. Click Continue.

  • First, you can have a confirmation code sent to a linked email address. Enter this code on the page, and you can then assign a new password.

  • If this doesn’t work, select Try another way to sign in.

  • You can now verify your identity using other methods, for example via an SMS, a phone call, your smartphone or a backup code. Clicking on the Try another way to sign in link may show you even more options.

  • If your Google Account is only associated with a Gmail address and you have not provided an alternative contact method, you will receive a login link to that address as a last option. However, this may take up to 72 hours as Google needs to verify your identity more thoroughly.

  • Tips: If you are afraid of forgetting your new password again, you should store it in a secure place in the future. You can use a password manager for this.

  • If you haven’t already done so, you should set up additional recovery methods for your Google account, for example by adding other email addresses or two-factor authentication. This will help you to access your account more quickly if you experience further problems.
