A battery leak can occur in almost any electronic device. In this practical tip, we explain whether this is toxic and how you should react in such a case.
Is the liquid in a battery toxic?
When a battery leaks, this is usually indicated by white deposits in the battery compartment of the electrical appliance. However, the leaking liquid does not pose a serious hazard.
- When a battery leaks, it is usually electrolytes that leak out – slightly caustic acids or bases.
- Although they may sting a little on contact with the skin, they are not seriously toxic. If you touch the liquid, you can simply wash your hands thoroughly.
- The same applies to clothing: if it comes into contact with battery fluid, a normal wash is enough to remove the stains.
Battery has leaked: This is how you should act
Proceed as follows:
- As soon as batteries are deformed or leak, you should replace them and dispose of them properly. Otherwise, the device may be damaged.
- You can put on ordinary household gloves to remove the batteries. This will help you avoid direct skin contact. If batteries have leaked in a device, it does not necessarily mean that the device is defective. Often a simple cleaning is enough and you can continue to use it.
- A cloth with lukewarm water is usually sufficient for cleaning. Wipe the white deposits inside the device with it.
- If battery acid has settled on the metallic contacts, water alone may not be sufficient. In this case, you can add a little vinegar or special alcohol for cleaning.
- To clean hard-to-reach places, you can use cotton swabs or a toothbrush.
