Why batteries leak is due, among other things, to prolonged non-use. However, there are ways to prevent this phenomenon.
Why batteries leak
When you insert batteries into a device, the chemicals inside the batteries generate gas to provide electricity. However, if the devices, such as remote controls or torches, are not used for a long period of time, the batteries may leak. A whitish powder-like mass will come out.
- However, this can only happen if you use outdated zinc-carbon batteries. Therefore, it is recommended to buy lithium or more modern alkaline batteries.
- The reason for leakage is that after a period of use, holes appear in the battery where the chemicals inside generate electricity. Even when not in use, the device repeatedly tests the battery’s performance, which in turn wears it out. At some point, the battery can no longer withstand this pressure.
- To prevent this process, you should remove the batteries from the device when it is not currently in use. This will extend the battery life.
- In addition, it is recommended that you only use batteries from the same manufacturer, of the same type and energy level in a device. This way, the batteries will all discharge at the same rate and speed.
- If a battery does leak, remove it carefully and without contact with the leaked mass and remove any residue on the device if necessary.
