Marvel Rivals on the PS5 – how to play the hero shooter

Marvel Rivals is available on the PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC. The F2P game can be easily downloaded from the Playstation via the PS Store.

• Since Marvel Rivals is an F2P title, you don’t have to pay for the game and can download it for free from the store. Likewise, no active PS+ subscription is required to play the hero shooter. This is because Sony allows all F2P games to use the online components without an active PS+ subscription.
• Although the game is free to play and all game-relevant content such as characters, game modes and maps are accessible to all players, as with almost all F2P games, there is an online store in the game. In this store, heroes’ costumes, animations and sprays can be purchased with real money.
• Thanks to the cross-progression feature, you can also play with or against players from other platforms on the PS5. The advantage of this is that the pool of players is significantly larger than if you only played with other PS5 owners. However, if you only want to play with other PlayStation users, you have to manually disable the feature in the game. The option for this can be found in the settings under “Social”.
• Cross-progression, i.e. the option to play on multiple platforms with one account, as is possible with Minecraft, for example, is also planned for Marvel Rivals, but could not be implemented by the time the game was released. This means that until the feature is implemented, you will need to create a new account if you want to play Marvel Rivals on other platforms in addition to the PS5.

On the PS5 as well as the other platforms, Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play hero shooter in which you take on one of the three roles of Vanguard, Duelist or Strategist and the associated characters from the Marvel universe in various modes to lead your team to victory.

• A hero shooter is a game in which you play a “hero” from a variety of available Marvel Rivals characters. Unlike shooters like Call of Duty, where the gameplay is mainly determined by the weapons and gadgets equipped, the characters in hero shooters all have individual abilities that usually differ greatly from those of the other heroes.
• Marvel Rivals divides the heroes and villains from the Marvel Comics into the three roles of Vanguard, Duelist and Strategist. Vanguards are there to take a lot of the damage and thus protect the other players. The Duelists’ job is to dish out damage and take out the opposing team. Strategists support Vanguards and Duelists, for example, by using healing and buffing abilities or by weakening opponents.
• In Marvel Rivals, there is a training mode where you can test all characters at your leisure and take note of their playing style. There are a total of five game modes: Convoy, Convergence, Domination, Conquest and Doom Match. The first three are played in both Quick Match and Competitive Mode, while Doom Match and Conquest are only available separately.
• In Convoy, you have to guide a vehicle across the entire map to a destination point while the opposing team prevents you from doing so. In Quick Match, you only win if the vehicle has been guided to the destination, while in Competitive Match, it can also be decisive which of the two teams has advanced the vehicle the furthest.
• Convergence is almost identical to Convoy, except that the attacking team must capture a point first to unlock the vehicle. In Domination, your team must capture a point and hold it for an extended period of time, because progress is interrupted as soon as opponents are on the point.
• Doom Match and Conquest are both Death Match modes, which means that the aim is to rack up as many kills as possible. In Doom Match, everyone plays against everyone else, while Conquest is team-based. In addition, in Conquest, it is not only the kills that count, but also the coins dropped by the killed opponents, which you have to collect.
