With the PS5, Sony offers the option of connecting the PS4 controllers from the previous console to the new flagship model simply and without additional tools.
Connect PS4 controller to PS5 – here’s what you need to do
To connect the PS4 controller to the PS5, you need to make a few settings in the PS5 menu. You can find out exactly what these are and what else you need to do below.
- Before you follow the steps for connecting the controllers, you should be aware that you can only play PS4 games on your PS5 with a PS4 controller. You still need a DualSense controller for PS5 games.
- The easiest way to connect the PS4 controller is to use the charging cable. You plug this into the controller and into the USB port of the PS5. If you now turn on the PS4 controller, Playstation will ask you which user you would like to use the controller with. Confirm your selection and the PS4 controller is now connected.
- Another, slightly more complicated, method is to set the PS4 controller to pairing mode by simultaneously pressing and holding the PS button and the share button. This is signaled by the controller flashing quickly. Now use your PS5 controller to navigate to the settings menu, which you can access via the gear icon at the top right of the screen.
- In the settings menu, navigate to the “Accessories” option, select “General” and then “Bluetooth Accessories”. Your PS4 controller is listed here under “Found Accessories”. Now, as with the other method, you have to assign the controller to a user profile and then you can use it.
