If you look at the list of installed programs on your computer, you will often come across a service called “Bonjour”.
Bonjour from Apple: what is it exactly?
Bonjour is installed with Apple products such as QuickTime, but usually with iTunes. The installation is silent and cannot be avoided.
- Bonjour is not a standalone program that you can actively use, but a service. This service runs invisibly in the background.
- It is mainly used to enable computers and devices that share their music to find each other automatically and on their own. However, the service is not really helpful for Windows users.
- Unfortunately, the service is also considered a security vulnerability and a problem cause. Many users report full internet connections for no reason, or even error messages regarding the connection. All the more reason to uninstall the service.
How to get rid of the Apple service
First try to remove the service via the Control Panel. Since this does not completely delete all files, further steps must be taken:
- Open the Control Panel and click on “Uninstall a program”.
- Select “Bonjour” from the list of installed programs, right-click and click on “Uninstall”.
- Now open the Start menu at the bottom left and enter “cmd” in the search line. The cmd.exe program will now appear in the list – the Windows command prompt.
- Right-click on the command prompt and select “Run as administrator” from the context menu. Confirm the prompt to open the black console.
- The following step is different for 32- and 64-bit systems. Therefore, check which variant you are using or simply type in both of the following commands.
- Now enter the following commands one after the other in the console and confirm each one with “Enter” (see image): 1. For 32-bit systems: “cdProgram FilesBonjour”; For 64 bit systems: “cdProgram Files (x86)Bonjour” 2. “mDNSResponder -remove” 3. “ren mdnsNSP.dll mdnsNSP.old”
- After a restart, the service should be deleted.
- To get rid of the last remnants, open the following paths in Windows Explorer and delete the folders named “Bonjour”. – C:Program Files – C:Program Files (x86)
- Bonjour should now be completely removed from your computer. However, an update or reinstallation of iTunes or QuickTime can cause the service to be reinstalled on your computer without your knowledge.
