Exchanges on eBay can sometimes be challenging, especially when it comes to private sales. We’ll explain how the eBay exchange process works.
Exchange items on eBay
As a general rule, commercial sellers on eBay must allow a 14-day return period. This is based on EU consumer protection law, which prescribes a 14-day right of withdrawal for online purchases. This means that you have up to 14 days after purchase to contact the seller and initiate a return. An exchange should also be requested during this time. Private sellers can also offer an exchange. However, this is voluntary and is therefore relatively rarely offered.
- Contact the seller as soon as possible to clarify whether an item for exchange is even in stock. If it is not available, you cannot force the exchange. However, you can still return the item.
- To do this, open the page of the purchased item and click on the “Question for seller” button on the right. Describe your exact concern in the message. Name both the purchased and the desired item and ask about the exchange process.
- If a commercial seller refuses an exchange in the first 14 days after purchase without reason, argue that you will otherwise return the item and order a new one. This not only means more work for you, but usually for the seller as well. At the latest then, even the most stubborn sellers on eBay give in.
- If you have a specific problem or your concern is not listed here, please contact eBay Customer Service.
eBay buyer wants to return an item: It is allegedly defective
If you, as a buyer, want to return an item that you have purchased on eBay, you should be aware of the following:
- Right of withdrawal: The right of withdrawal only applies within the EU and to commercial sellers. As a buyer outside the EU or from a private seller, you should take a close look at the return policy, ideally before you buy.
- Return process: Make sure you return the goods in the condition in which you received them in order to be entitled to a refund. If the goods are defective on arrival, secure photographic or video evidence.
- Cost of return: Clarify who will bear the costs of return. This depends on the seller. However, since this must be stated in the offer, you can also view this before purchasing.
