How to find the security code on a credit card

by Johannes

The security code on your credit card is a certain sequence of numbers that you need if you want to order something on the internet.

Security code on the credit card: How to find it

The security code is a three- to four-digit number. It is usually located on the back of your credit card. This code is also referred to as the card verification number and is abbreviated CVV for Card Code Verification. Depending on the provider, it may also be abbreviated CVV2, CCV, CVN, CVC (for Mastercard), CSC or CSC.

  • This security feature is not machine-readable and serves as protection against misuse of your credit card.
  • If you want to make a distance payment, for example to pay for something in online shopping or book a trip, you need the security code to complete the payment process via credit card.
  • With all MasterCard and Visa credit cards, you will find the three-digit security code on the back of your credit card. It is located above, next to or below the signature field.
  • With American Express, the security code is four digits long. The second peculiarity is that it is located on the front of the credit card.

Credit card number vs. security code

The credit card number and the security code or check digit are two entirely different things.

  • The credit card number is 12 to 16 digits long. The digits are embossed on almost all credit cards. Some companies, such as Barclays, have developed new credit cards. Here, the 16-digit number is now on the back and is no longer embossed.
  • The card verification number, on the other hand, is only three to four digits long and is not embossed. It can be found on almost all credit cards near the signature field on the back and is usually printed in italics.
  • More modern credit card companies print the card verification number below the credit card number. The card’s expiry date is also printed next to it.
  • All credit cards have in common that the credit card number and security code or verification number have no connection.
