Activating the split keyboard on the iPad - Practical Tips

Activating the split keyboard on the iPad

by Johannes

The split keyboard on the iPad allows for comfortable typing with both thumbs, especially in portrait mode. However, the function is only available on some models.

Activating the split keyboard

To use the split keyboard, a few steps are required. Please note that only the following models support the split keyboard: iPad mini (from 5th generation), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad (6th to 9th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation).

  • Open Settings: Tap the Settings app on your iPad.
  • Select General: Navigate to “General” and then to “Keyboard”.
  • Enable Split Keyboard: Turn on the “Split keyboard” option.
  • Split the keyboard: Open an app that allows text input, such as “Notes”. Place two fingers on the keyboard and drag them apart. Alternatively, press and hold the keyboard icon in the lower right corner and select “Split”.
  • Merge the keyboard: To merge the split keyboard, place two fingers on the split keyboard and drag them together. You can also hold down the keyboard icon and select “Merge”.

Customizing and using the split keyboard

The split keyboard offers a range of customization options:

  • Adjust the position: Tap and hold the keyboard icon and select “Dock” or “Undock” to fix the keyboard to the bottom of the screen or make it move freely.
  • Use a floating keyboard: You can activate the floating keyboard for a more compact keyboard. Press and hold the keyboard icon and select “Float”. The floating keyboard can be positioned anywhere on the screen and offers swipe input.
