To set up your Wi-Fi or internet access, you need to access your router. To do that, you need the device’s IP address.
Accessing the router: find out the IP address
In order to access your router, you first need to find out what its IP address is. If you already know it, you can skip to the second paragraph. By default, the IP address is 192.168.1.1, but it may vary depending on the manufacturer.
- Open the Windows command prompt. To do this, enter “cmd” in the search field in Windows and select “Run as administrator” in the search results for “Command Prompt”.
- Type the command “ipconfig” (without quotation marks) into the command prompt and confirm again with “Enter”.
- Find the entry “Default Gateway” and note the IP address.
- Finding the IP address on a Mac is also quite easy.
How to access your router
Now that you know your router’s IP address, you can access your router. To do so, do the following:
- Open your Internet browser.
- Enter “http://”IP address of your router” into the address bar and press ‘Enter’. Replace ‘IP address of your router’ with the IP address found in the previous step. Write the IP address without quotation marks in the address bar.
- The login window of your router will now open.
- In most cases, no password has been set for the initial configuration. If you are asked for a password, please refer to your router’s user manual. You will find the default password there.
