Repairing a stone chip with superglue? All information

by Johannes

You should not repair a stone chip in the windshield with superglue. There is another procedure for an emergency repair.

Do not repair stone chips with superglue

If you notice a stone chip in the windshield, please do not repair it with superglue.

  • Even if you see numerous recommendations on various websites or on YouTube, superglue is never a suitable repair material.
  • The windshield and this type of adhesive are not compatible. If you still fill the hole left by the rockfall with superglue, it will make the problem even worse.
  • Superglue in the rockfall hole causes the windshield to crack faster.

This is how to proceed in the event of a rockfall

If you notice damage to your windshield, stop your car immediately.

  • To prevent the windshield from cracking around the rockfall, tear up some paper or cellophane (e.g. from a plastic bag). This will protect the stone-chipped area from dirt and moisture.
  • Cover it with a piece of adhesive tape. Alternatively, you can use an emergency repair kit for such purposes in your car and use it according to the instructions.
  • Adjust the driver’s seat so that you still have a good view of the road despite the tape. Either drive home or go straight to the garage. Drive slowly, gently and carefully. Avoid driving over bumpy surfaces.
  • Make an appointment to come to the workshop immediately. Here, the professionals can decide whether the windshield can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.

When a rockfall cannot be repaired

Not every stone chip can be repaired economically. A repair is only possible in some cases. Often the windshield has to be replaced. This is necessary if:

  • the object has hit the driver’s field of vision,
  • a crack has developed and this ends less than 20 cm from the edge of the windshield,
  • the diameter of the stone-caused hole is greater than 1.5 cm,
  • other elements (e.g. light sensor) are affected,
  • the object has penetrated, i.e. there is a real hole in the windshield.
