PayPal: How to change the language on PayPal

by Johannes

Changing the language on PayPal is easy and only takes a few steps. This can be done both via the browser and via the app.

How to change the language on PayPal

Whether for online shops, transactions via classifieds and the like, or paying among friends: PayPal is an increasingly popular payment method. If you want to change the language setting on PayPal, this can be done in just a few steps. The change only affects your PayPal account and the website. Email notifications from PayPal may still be sent in the language of the country in which your account is set up.

  • Sign in: Create your PayPal account or sign in to your existing account.
  • Go to profile: Click on the gear symbol in the top right corner to access the settings.
  • Language Settings: In the settings under “Account” there is an option for “Language”. This is sometimes also found under “General”, “System” or “Account Settings”.
  • Select Language: Choose the language you want from the list.
  • Save Language: Save the change. PayPal will immediately update the language and the interface should now be in the new language.
  • If you’re using PayPal on your phone or tablet and want to change the language, check your device’s language settings. The app often adjusts automatically to match the device language.

What if I can’t change the language?

If changing the language doesn’t work, you can still follow some of the steps to adjust the settings:

  • Clear cache and cookies: Sometimes old language settings remain stored in the browser. Clear the cache and cookies and then try again.
  • Update the app: If you are using the PayPal app, make sure you have the latest version installed. Outdated apps can have problems with the settings.
  • Change browser or device: Try logging in on a different device or browser. It may well be that the problem is not only on your current device.
  • Reach customer service: If none of the tips work, use PayPal’s customer service. To do this, log in to your account and go to Help & Contact at the bottom of the page. Here you will find contact options via email, phone and sometimes also via live chat.
  • Tip: When traveling internationally, PayPal often automatically switches to the language of the country you are in. This is usually due to the device’s location data or IP settings. In most cases, the language can then be switched back manually. Add this to your list of essential travel preparations.
