Kinetic Sand, also known as magic sand, doesn’t have to cost a fortune. You can easily make it yourself.
How to make Kinetic Sand yourself
Kinetic Sand has a very special consistency. It can be shaped like playdough, but also crumbles when it is worked with your hands again. You can make the magic sand yourself at home with just a few ingredients.
- To make Kinetic Sand, you only need eight cups of flour, one cup of oil and a little food coloring if you want to make it colorful.
- Put the flour and oil in a bowl and knead everything together vigorously. If the magic sand doesn’t have the right consistency yet and is too firm or too soft, add a little more oil or flour.
- Now add the food coloring to the bowl so that the sand takes on color. A small dash will give a pastel coloration, while more food coloring will make the sand appear stronger.
- Knead everything again and store the sand in an airtight box after playing.
Play ideas with the magic sand
Your child will have a lot of fun experimenting with the magic sand and will first try out how the mass feels and behaves. With these play ideas, you can bring some variety into it:
- Hide small objects such as beads, figures or coins in the sand and let your children go on a treasure hunt.
- Press various objects into the sand and discover the imprints. What does the imprint of a shell look like? Or a Lego brick?
- Playing with bulk is also fun. All the child needs are several bowls in different sizes and spoons. This turns kinetic sand into an educational toy that even promotes fine motor skills.
