Since the second generation of Pokémon was introduced, Onix can evolve into Stahlos. The Metal Shell item plays a central role in this
Onix can only evolve with the help of an item
Even in the first editions of the video game series from Game Freak and Nintendo, some Pokémon could not be evolved simply by reaching a certain level. For example, Evoli needed a water, thunder or fire stone to become Aquana, Blitza or Flamara respectively, and the spirit Pokémon Alpollo could only evolve into the now iconic Gengar by swapping with another trainer.
- These options were not yet relevant for the Rock and Ground Pokémon Onix, as it stood alone at the time and was not part of an evolution series. However, this changed with the release of the Silver and Golden Editions for the Gameboy Color in 1999.
- With Stahlos (Steelix), number 208 in the national Pokédex, Onix now received an evolution of the Steel type, which was first seen in the Pokémon anime in 2001.
- In order for Onix to evolve into Stahlos, trainers must first equip the Stone Snake with the Metal Shell item. Simply give the Pokémon the item to wear
- The second step is to swap Onix and its item for another player’s Pokémon. Once the process is complete, evolution begins and the swap partner now has a Stahlos.
- If you want to add it to your own Pokédex or team, we recommend swapping it back directly. Alternatively, both players can simply swap an Onix with a metal shell directly with each other.
- This combination of item and swap works in almost all Pokémon games that feature the Evolution series.
- Exceptions to this are “Pokémon Legends: Arceus” for the Nintendo Switch and the mobile game ‘Pokémon Go’.
- In the Arceus game, you can simply use the metal shell directly.
- In Pokémon Go, on the other hand, you can press the “Evolve” button on your Onix as soon as you have a Metal Shell and 50 Onix Candies. In this case, the candies for the evolution process are consumed in addition to the item
