HDMI in or out? Differences between input and output - Practical Tips

HDMI in or out? Differences between input and output

by Pramith

HDMI in or out – there are significant differences here. An HDMI input has different functions and requirements than an HDMI output

HDMI in or out: What the input can do

HDMI – short for High-Definition Multimedia Interface – is a transmission interface for high-resolution audio and video signals. The data is transmitted to home entertainment and other media devices.

  • HDMI enables you to transmit high-resolution videos. In addition, video sources connected to HDMI can automatically adjust the audio resolution. Furthermore, the interface is able to store, transmit and play back data signals without changes to the original data.
  • A distinction is made between HDMI inputs and HDMI outputs for the interfaces. HDMI in (input) receive audio and visual signals. On TV or home cinema devices such as receivers or monitors, there is often an interface labeled HDMI out (output) to forward the signals to other devices.
  • The HDMI input receives light, bright colors and sound from the receiving device, such as Blu-ray players, game consoles or A/V receivers.

HDMI output: This is the HDMI out

HDMI outputs are used to send audio and video data. An HDMI out therefore does the exact opposite of an HDMI in, in that pixels, audio and Ethernet are fed into the HDMI input.

  • The HDMI output “takes care” of televisions and monitors by supplying colors and audio or video data. In short: A device with HDMI output sends audio, video or Ethernet data to the HDMI input.
  • An example: If you want to output a Blu-ray via the TV, then there must be a connection between the HDMI output of the Blu-ray player and the HDMI input of the TV.
  • If, on the other hand, you want to have a display from the laptop on a TV, you must connect the HDMI input of the laptop to the HDMI output of the TV using an HDMI cable.
  • You may have asked yourself whether you can use the HDMI input as an HDMI output. The answer: No. Both ports are set up differently. But: With special adapters or a HUB, the ports can be made interchangeable
