macOS X: How to cut files

In comparison to Windows or more recent macOS versions, the key combination [command] + [X] does not work to cut files. You have to move them instead, which works as follows:

  • Navigate in the Finder or on the desktop to the file you want to move. Select it with your mouse and press [command] + [C].
  • Alternatively, right-click on the file to copy it. Now change to the target folder where the file should be located in the future.
  • To paste the file to the desired location, use the key combination [command] + [option/alt] + [V]. This will move the file from the original location to the destination and not just copy it.
  • It is also possible to paste the file into the desired folder via the editing menu. To do this, hold down the [option/alt] key while clicking on Edit. In the context menu that appears, select the option Move object here
