The Scrum Master is responsible for leading the development team through the various project phases in the Scrum project management model
The Scrum Master – an important role in the Scrum method
Scrum is a project management framework. It is one of the agile methods characterized by flat hierarchies, open communication and flexible processes. The framework was developed in software engineering, but is now also used in many other areas.
- Scrum is based on the assumption that some projects are too confusing at the beginning and their development process is too unpredictable to be summarized in a “rigid” plan. For this reason, a regular compilation and evaluation of interim results should take place, which can be used to adapt and improve the project process.
- The Scrum team consists of the Product Owner, the developers and the Scrum Master. The Scrum Master takes on the role of coach. He explains the rules of Scrum and creates a framework for the development team
- The Scrum Master should only monitor the process with regard to compliance with the Scrum rules, for example compliance with time limits. They do not issue any work instructions in the project itself
- In addition, the Scrum Master is responsible for resolving conflicts within the development team. He acts as a contact person in the event of problems between the development team and the product owner or other departments within the company. He leads and moderates the various forms of meetings that are common in the Scrum method (e.g. sprints, reviews, etc.)
- The Product Owner designs and communicates the goal and characteristics of the product to be developed. He is indispensable for the realization of the product vision. To this end, they are in contact with the stakeholders and incorporate their requirements into the product design
Professional career and salary of a Scrum Master
- There is no standardized training for a Scrum Master, only the possibility of further training, for example after studying business administration. Proven experience as a developer in a Scrum project or with another agile project management method is therefore of great importance when looking for a job.
- In addition to demonstrating existing experience with Scrum, certificates also play an important role in job applications. A certification on your CV shows the employer that you have dealt with the topic in depth.
- Various bodies offer to issue such certificates, for example the technical testing organization TÜV SÜD. Their certification as a Scrum Master is internationally recognized and subject to a fee.
- The tasks of the Scrum Master provide information about the soft skills required for this work. The Scrum Master should have a high degree of knowledge of human nature and empathy. They should have the ability to lead, motivate and support a team and resolve conflicts in an effective and healthy way
- Working as a Scrum Master is possible in any type of company (large, medium-sized or small). The position is mainly advertised in software development, but the Scrum method is also increasingly being used in various service companies or in agile marketing.
- The salary of a Scrum Master varies depending on professional experience, size and type of company and location. According to the Campusjäger portal, the salary range is between €3000 and €7000 per month
