What does local transportation mean? We explain

by Pramith

You often hear the word local transport, but not everyone knows what it actually means. This form of transport is clearly different from others

What the term local transport means

The term local transport refers to a type of transport that can take place in a specific location, but also outside of it. However, the traffic is restricted to limited routes and times.

  • In local transportation, goods and people are transported by road, rail, water or air. Various means of transportation are available for this purpose. Buses, trains, underground trains and streetcars, cars and even helicopters are mainly used for local transport
  • People and goods are transported within the locality (village, municipality, city) (local transport) or to neighboring municipalities and cities (interurban transport).
  • In order for it to really be local transport, the transportation process, including the vehicle returning to the point of departure, must take place on the same day. Buses are the best example. The drivers start their service at the bus station, drive their passengers around the city for the entire day and the last driver ends the service at the bus station at the end of the day.
  • While the time refers to one day if it is a local service, the distance for transportation refers to a maximum of 50 km into the surrounding area. Buses, vans or even trucks are used for transportation. Anything beyond this is then referred to as regional transport and from 150 km as long-distance transport
  • Other features of local transport include a high density of stops and frequency, short trips between districts and municipalities, shuttle services, school bus services and ferry trips with ferries for people, bicycles and cars.
