Tik Tok ban: The video portal is not allowed in these countries
The TikTok platform has established itself as one of the most popular social networks worldwide. More than one billion users are said to have registered there. Short video clips generate excitement and interest. However, the app does not work everywhere in the world.
- In many countries, TikTok is classified as a security risk. This has to do with the parent company “Bytedance”, which is owned to a certain extent by Chinese operators. The group is suspected of making user data from the app available to the Chinese government
- In the USA, government employees are therefore not allowed to install and use TikTok on their work cell phones. Several other institutions in America do the same
- TikTok is also banned on work cell phones in Canada. The ban is based on the fact that the app can access a lot of the phone’s content. However, there is no evidence of data being spied on so far
- Government employees in the European Union are also not allowed to install the app on their work cell phones. This regulation has been in place since February 2023. There is great concern that China could have access to sensitive data.
- Many EU countries have followed this directive and are also banning their government employees from using TikTok on work devices. These include Estonia, Latvia, Belgium and the Netherlands, for example.
- In Germany, such a ban has not yet been imposed, but it is not even possible to download TikTok on a government-issued cell phone. The app is also not pre-installed
- In Austria, the ban on TikTok affects all employees in the public sector. France goes one step further: in addition to TikTok, X (Twitter), Instagram and Netflix are also banned for public sector employees or government employees
- In Denmark, employees of the Ministry of Security are not allowed to use the app and in Sweden those who work in the military. The ban on TikTok is similar in Norway and in many other countries TikTok may not be downloaded and used on work cell phones
Tik Tok ban for private users
After the TikTok app was banned for public sector and government employees in many countries around the world, there are also countries where the app cannot be used by private individuals because it is considered dangerous.
- In the US state of Montana, the app may no longer be downloaded since the beginning of 2024. However, it remains unpunished if citizens continue to use it
- Afghanistan has already banned TikTok completely in 2022. The Taliban see one reason for this as misleading young people.
- In India, residents have no longer been able to access the app since 2020. The country sees a threat to the security and sovereignty of the state. However, there are successful alternatives such as “Moj” and “Josh”. These are video platforms that were developed in India
- TikTok has also been banned from use in Jordan since 2022. The reason for this can be found in protests in which security forces were killed or injured.
- In Nepal, TikTok can also no longer be used. This ban has been in place since the end of 2023 because Tik Tok would harm social harmony.
