Simon Beckett has created the forensic anthropologist David Hunter, a character who inspires with his criminal cases. The entire series is divided into six novels and two novellas, which were published from 2006 to 2019.

  • The Chemistry of Death is the first novel in the series and has been on the market since 2006. David Hunter investigates the murder of Sally Palmer while he himself is a suspect for the villagers.
  • The second part of the series, entitled Cold Ashes, was published in 2007. It is about a series of murders on the deserted island of Runa, which is cut off from the outside world. This puts Hunter to the test.
  • The third part followed in 2009 with Corpse Pale. After his traumatic experience in the predecessor, his knowledge is in demand in the Smoky Mountains.
  • 2010 Beckett published Decomposition, the fourth installment in the series. In this one, Hunter has to face the dangerous murderer Jerome Monk.
  • The novellaKatz und Maus was only published three years later. It is a shorter story that revolves around an old case of Hunter’s.
  • 2016 saw the publication of the next novellaSnowfall & An Ordinary Day. In this one, Beckett combines two crime stories about Hunter for a contemplative and exciting Christmas holiday.
  • The fifth part of the series was published in 2017 with Totenfang. The novel revolves around the mysterious Leo Villiers and the unfriendly Trask family.
  • 2019 saw the publication of The Eternal Dead, the sixth installment in the David Hunter series. This time, the anthropologist finds himself in the eerie St. Jude’s Hospital in north London.

David Hunter order: Don’t forget the series

In addition to the book series, there is a David Hunter television series from Paramount+.

  • It is appropriately titled The Chemistry of Death and was released on January 12, 2023 as a British-German production. The title character, David Hunter, is played by Briton Harry Treadaway
  • The series comprises six episodes based on the first two books. It is a loose summary of the works.
  • A further season has not yet been announced (as of January 2024).
