Force restart iPad Air: Here's how - Practical Tips

Force restart iPad Air: Here’s how

by Pramith

If the iPad Air is no longer responding, you can force a restart with the right key combination. It will then be ready for use again

Force restart iPad Air with Face ID or Touch ID in the top button

If you have a newer iPad Air with Face ID or Touch ID in the top button and without a Home button, you can use a key combination to force restart the iPad Air if your device no longer responds to other inputs. Hold the device upright so that the top button (with Touch ID) is at the top right.

  • The two volume buttons on the iPad Air are either on the right-hand side or on the left-hand side of the top of the device. This depends on the model and the size of the display. However, the key combination works equally well
  • Press the top or right volume button briefly and release it again quickly. This volume button is closest to the top right button.
  • Then press the lower or left volume button briefly and release it again quickly. This volume button is further away from the top right button
  • Press and hold the top right button. When the screen goes black, the device will restart. Press and hold the buttons until the Apple logo appears.
  • Now you have forced the iPad Air to restart and can release the button again.
  • The device should then boot up and can be used as usual.

iPad Air force restart with Home button

You can also easily force a restart on older iPad Air models with a Home button. The procedure is similar to that described above for newer models.

  • Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time to force restart the iPad Air
  • After a few seconds, the screen goes dark.
  • Keep the buttons pressed until the Apple logo appears.
