Meaning CVV: card verification number simply explained

by Mike

You should know the meaning of CVV, because the card verification number is an important security aspect of credit and debit cards.

Meaning of CVV: What’s behind the number

CVV stands for Card Verification Value. It is a three-digit number found on the back of most credit and debit cards. American Express cards are an exception. Here, the card verification number is found on the front and consists of four digits.

  • The CVV was introduced to increase protection against fraud. This is especially true for transactions where the physical card is not presented, such as online shopping.
  • When you shop or pay for services online, you will usually be asked to enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV. Entering the CVV ensures that you actually own the card, not just know the card number and expiration date.
  • Because the CVV does not appear on receipts or other documents and is not stored magnetically or stored on the card’s chip, it provides additional protection against card fraud.
  • Important: Never share your CVV in emails or over the phone. Use only secure and trusted websites when using your card information online.
