There are numerous tools on the internet that are based on artificial intelligence and we let two image generators go head-to-head in a duel, DALL-E vs Midjourney.
DALL-E vs Midjourney: Midjourney at a glance
On its homepage, Midjourney describes itself as “an independent research lab exploring New Media of Thought and expanding the imagination of the human species.” It was founded by David Holz. It is an interactive chat where you can send commands and prompts to an AI via Discord. It then gives you a picture based on your text prompts.
- To use Midjourney, you need to have a little patience. The user interface is a bit confusing.
- First click on a link and then on “Sign In”. You will then be automatically redirected to the Discord page. On this page you can register or log in. After accepting the message “An external application wants to access your Discord account”, you have to click on “Join the Discord to start creating” and accept the message “You have been invited to join”.
- Benefits of Midjourney: You get high quality results from the AI. In addition, other people’s work can be viewed. The prices are a little cheaper than with DALL-E. For 200 prompts you pay 10 US dollars. However, the first 25 images are free.
- Disadvantages of Midjourney: The use is somewhat cumbersome, as Midjourney is only accessible via Discord. This also makes it less intuitive to use. Because of the use via Discord, you work together with others via a chat. If you want to work in peace, you have to invite the bot to your private server. If the user rate is high, you receive the message “Job action restricted”. This means you can only work with a subscription or you have to try again the next day.
- Since March 2023, Midjourney is only available for a fee – so you will receive the message “Job action restricted” even if you are supposedly using it for free.
DALL-E at a glance
DALL-E is a deep learning model from OpenAI that can be used to generate digital images based on descriptions. It was first mentioned in 2021. In 2022, OpenAI introduced DALL-E 2 to the world.
- Feature: After you have registered via the “Sign Up” link, you can get started immediately. This means that you enter as concrete a description as possible of the image you want in the text field and confirm the entry with the “Generate” button.
- If you want to use DALL-E via its own website, you must first buy credits. The free initial bonus of 15 credits is only available to those who have registered as users of the image generator before 6 April 2023.
- Advantages of DALL-E: You get high quality images of close-ups and dress designs. A safety mechanism is programmed. This prevents you from generating images for bad intentions. You can also generate multiple images at the same time.
- Microsoft integrated the AI system Dall-E into its in-house search engine Bing and called it Image Creator. After logging in with a Microsoft account, you get 25 credits (called “boosts”) that you can use for image creation.
- If you use DALL-E via the Bing Image Creator, the 25 boosts are replenished weekly. Once they are used up, you get more through the Microsoft Rewards programme. 5 credits will cost you 500 Reward Points. However, you can also generate images without Boosts, it only takes 30 seconds.
- Disadvantages of DALL-E: Copyright of the AI images is unclear. It may happen that the AI does not understand your text. The tool may then use data from a previous training to generate the image. This can generate ‘wrong’ results. The tool is more expensive than Midjourney and you pay $15 for 115 prompts at DALL-E.
- Example prompt: “Battle between two artificial intelligences at eye level. The opponents are Midjourney and DALL-E. 2400px by 1600px “
