In mid-September 2023, iOS 17 is available for many Apple devices. However, not all iPhones are compatible with the new operating system.
These Apple devices are running iOS 17
When Apple releases a new version of the iOS operating system, older Apple devices are usually left behind in terms of compatibility with the update. For example, iOS 17 does not run on every iPhone either.
- While the update to iOS 16 was not available for all devices that were not older than 6 years, this period of time, which is actually typical for Apple in terms of compatibility, does not apply to iOS 17.
- The update won’t run on iPhone models from 2016 and older – but it won’t run on devices from 2017 either. For example, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were released in September 2017, but you can’t install iOS 17 on these models.
- The iPhone X – also unveiled to the public in 2017 – was also removed from the iOS 17 compatibility list.
- So if you want to install the update, you need at least an iPhone XS or XR. All newer models, i.e. iPhones from the 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 series, will also run iOS.
When did iOS 17 become available
In Germany, iOS 17 has been available for download since 18 September 2023.
- Those who didn’t want to wait for the release could install iOS 17 on their iPhone as a public beta version beforehand.
- Developers could familiarise themselves with the new operating system in advance with iOS 17 Beta for Developers
- iOS 17 brings many new features, such as sideloading.
