Tomatoes need a lot of nutrients and are therefore highly nutritious. In this article you will learn which simple home remedies and professional fertilisers you can use to achieve an optimal yield from your tomatoes.
Fertilising tomatoes with home remedies
If you want to fertilise your tomatoes, you don’t have to resort to professional fertilisers straight away. Simple home remedies can also guarantee the growth of the plants by providing them with an optimal supply of sufficient nutrients. These home remedies are wonderful for fertilising tomatoes:
- Stinging nettle liquid manure: To use nettle liquid manure as a fertiliser, you should dilute it in a ratio of 1:10. Fertilise the tomatoes with it every 2nd week until they flower.
- Compost: When planting out the tomatoes, you can mix 3 to 5 litres of compost per square metre into the soil.
- Horn shavings: Horn shavings should only be used outdoors and not in containers. Add a handful of shavings to the soil before planting out.
- Horse manure: Either mix the manure well with the soil or let it dry beforehand to avoid possible burns to the plant.
These professional fertilisers are available for tomatoes
Professional fertilisers provide an optimal distribution of the required nutrients for tomatoes. These usually have 3 g nitrogen, 4 g magnesium, 3.8 g potassium and 0.5 g phosphate and are based directly on the nutrient requirements of the plants. You can choose between liquid fertilisers or sticks and drops
- You can distribute liquid fertiliser evenly over the soil in the bed. One advantage is that the extra liquid supply can keep the tomatoes from drying out.
- Stick or dig fertiliser sticks into the soil close to the root. This will give the tomatoes sufficient supply for up to 3 months.
