WebP format – What the Google Image Format is all about

by Johannes

The WebP format is a new image format that you need to know about. It is especially interesting if you are in the field of web design or run your own website

WebP format: That’s why it’s interesting

The WebP format was developed by Google and is intended to benefit web design.

  • The WebP format is an image format similar to JPG or PNG.
  • It was developed by Google specifically for use on the Internet, i.e. for websites.
  • In contrast to common image types, such as PNG or JPG, the WebP format is said to consume up to 30 percent less memory. Accordingly, your website is less burdened and its performance is faster. Loading times are thus reduced.
  • You can convert your images into WebP format using online conversion services, such as the Convertio tool, and then use them for the website.

WebP: Not compatible with all browsers

The WebP image format may be useful for your website. However, note that the format is not compatible with all browsers.

  • If you use images in WebP format on your website, they are not supported by all browsers. In particular, older Safari browsers, which are installed on many computers and cannot be updated due to the hardware, do not support the image format. In this case, you will be shown an empty field instead of the image.
  • Compressing your WebP images is more likely to result in loss. You should therefore always check that the images are then displayed correctly and make sure that they are not blurred.
