Washing a cap: This is how to get sweat stains out. - Practical Tips

Washing a cap: This is how to get sweat stains out.

by Corinna

Caps are a perfect everyday companion if you want to be warm or protected from the sun on your head, or if you want to keep your hair out of your face during sports. We’ll show you the best way to wash your cap to get any sweat stains out again.

How to wash a cap properly

The visor inside a cap may be made of cardboard. This would be damaged if washed in a washing machine. Therefore, it is advisable to wash your peaked cap by hand.

  • For cleaning you can use shampoo, liquid soap or detergent.
  • Moisten your cap or place it in a water bath briefly. Be sure to keep the screen away from the water if necessary.
  • Put the preferred cleaning agent on the stain, and use a toothbrush to lather up the cleaning agent.
  • Work on the spot with the sweat stain carefully and rather longer for that. This way you will not damage the fabric of your cap and still manage to remove the stain.
  • Now rinse the detergent from the fabric of your cap with clean water. You can repeat this process until the sweat stain is gone.
  • To wash the visor, just wet it and proceed as described earlier.
  • To remove the detergent on the canopy, use a clean cotton cloth.
  • Dip this in water and use the damp cloth to remove the cleaning agent. Repeat the process until the fabric is clean and without cleaning residue.

Machine wash cap

If the visor of your cap is not made of cardboard and the care instructions label states that you can wash the cap in a machine, there are other ways to remove the sweat stains:

  • Just wash your cap in the dishwasher, if machine washing is allowed according to the symbols, instead of in the washing machine.
  • Washing in the dishwasher is gentle on the material and prevents the cap from losing its shape.
  • Place the peaked cap in the top compartment of the dishwasher and turn on the gentle cycle. You can use a cleaning rod. However, do not add dishes that are too dirty to avoid further stains.
  • When washing the cap in the washing machine, it is recommended to put it in a laundry net to protect the fabric. Set the lowest cleaning level without a spin cycle. This will prevent premature wear of the material.
  • Before drying, it is best to put the cap on briefly to shape it and bend the screen to shape. Then hang it up to dry or lay it flat with the opening facing down.
  • Tension the wet cap over a bowl, or put it on another cap of the same shape, prevent the umbrella cap from losing its shape.
