Sorting a Spotify playlist – this is how it works

by Johannes

On Spotify, you can sort a playlist with just a few clicks. This way, you can listen to your favourite music in a very specific order.

Sort playlist on Spotify: Desktop version

To set a specific order of songs, it’s a good idea to sort playlists on Spotify. This is quite simple:

  • As soon as you open a playlist, you can sort by the following categories in the drop-down menu at the top right: Title, Artist Name, Album Name, Date the song was added and Duration. Spotify sorts the songs in these categories alphabetically.
  • If you want to create a custom order, click this option in the drop-down menu.
  • If you want to sort the songs individually, hold down the left mouse button over a song and move it to the desired position. Spotify automatically saves the changes.

Spotify playlist sort in the app

If you tend to use Spotify via your smartphone, there is also an option in the app to sort a playlist.

  • Open the Spotify app and tap the three dots at the top right.
  • Go to “Edit Playlist”.
  • Tap the three dashes after a song, hold down the spot and then move the song by dragging it with your finger.
  • Then go to Save to confirm the changes.
  • Scroll all the way down within the playlist and select “Custom” in the “Sort” field to display your playlist in the desired order.
